Evaluation and Retraining Program
Shaughnessy-Kaplan Rehabilitation Hospital offers a comprehensive
Driving Evaluation and Retraining Program to assess your ability
to return to driving. There are two components to this program:
Clinical Driving Evaluation with an Occupational Therapist
and On-The-Road Assessment with a Certified Driving Instructor
from Adaptive Driving Program, Inc.
Clinical Driving Evaluation An Occupational Therapist will
assess your vision, attention, ability to read traffic signs,
ability to evaluate "problem" driving situations, ability
to move between gas and brake quickly, overall reaction time
and other physical abilities. This evaluation also examines
the need for adaptive equipment to make driving easier for
you.
On-The-Road Test
Following your success in completing the clinic evaluation,
an On-The-Road Test will be performed at the Clinic with an
occupational therapist as well as a Certified Driving Instructor
from Adaptive Driving Program, Inc. Results of this test are
sent to your referring physician who will communicate your
readiness to take the Registry On-The-Road Competency Test
to the Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles.
Retraining Program
If a patient fails a component of the evaluation, a retraining
program may be recommended. This could involve occupational
therapy to address physical issues, specialized glasses to
address visual problems, or practice driving sessions with
an instructor from Adaptive Driving Program, Inc. Recommendations
are patient-specific and based on the outcome of the Driving
Assessment.
